Match the care to the pet

There's no single best option — only the best fit for your particular animal. A sociable, confident dog may thrive at a busy boarding kennel; an anxious or elderly pet, or most cats, often cope far better in the calm of their own home with a sitter visiting. Start by being honest about your pet's temperament.

Kennels and catteries

A good facility offers security, routine and staff on hand. Visit in person first: look for clean, spacious, well-ventilated runs, separate dog and cat areas, and a clear vaccination and emergency policy. Ask about exercise, how they handle illness, and whether your pet's own food and bedding can come along.

Sitters and home care

A house-sitter or visiting pet sitter keeps your animal in familiar surroundings with their normal routine — ideal for cats and homebody pets. Choose someone insured and reference-checked, do a meet-and-greet first, and leave detailed notes on feeding, medication, vet details and habits. Agree exactly how often they'll visit.

Set your pet up to cope

Whatever you choose, book early over holidays, make sure vaccinations are current, and leave something that smells of home. A short trial — a single overnight or a couple of sitter visits — tells you how your pet copes before a longer trip. Leave your contact details and a backup, and go enjoy your time away knowing they're in good hands.
