Cat Body Language: What the Ears, Tail and Eyes Are Telling You
The tail headlines
Tail straight up: confident, friendly greeting. Up with a hook: cautious friendly. Puffed: frightened. Low and swishing: irritated. Thumping or lashing: stop what you're doing. The tail is the mood banner — read it before reaching.
Ears and whiskers
Ears forward: engaged and content. Swiveling: monitoring. Flattened sideways ('airplane ears'): anxious. Pinned flat back: fear or fury — give space. Whiskers relaxed and fanned mean calm; pulled tight against the face mean stress.
The eyes
Slow blinks are affection — return them slowly and you're speaking cat. Dilated pupils mean excitement or fear (context decides); a hard direct stare is a threat in feline, which is why cats famously gravitate to the person ignoring them.
The petting bite decoded
Purring plus suddenly biting isn't betrayal — you missed the earlier signals: tail twitch, skin ripple, ears rotating back. Most cats prefer short sessions around the cheeks and chin. Watch the signals, quit while ahead, and 'unpredictable' cats become perfectly predictable.
