Cat Cremation in South Africa: Costs, Options and What to Expect

What it costs

Most domestic cats weigh 3–6kg and sit in the smallest cremation bracket. In South Africa expect roughly R1,100–R1,900 for an individual cremation with the ashes returned, and R400–R800 for a communal cremation with nothing returned. Collection from your home generally adds R250–R500.

If your cat died at home

Wrap them in a towel or their own blanket and move them somewhere cool. Cats often die in odd places — under a bed, behind a cupboard, in a wardrobe — and it is normal for a cat who knows they are dying to hide. If they have died outside, bring them in out of the sun before you make any calls.

Individual versus communal, honestly

If you want ashes back, you need individual. There is no partial version. Ask the crematorium to state on the invoice that the cremation is individual, and ask what identification travels with your cat. A crematorium that answers that question easily is one you can trust.

Other cats in the house

Surviving cats often search, call, or go off their food for a week or two. Letting them see and smell the body, if that is possible, appears to help some cats settle faster. It is not distressing to them in the way people fear.
