Chocolate and Dogs: How Much Is Dangerous?
Why chocolate is toxic
Dogs metabolize theobromine (and caffeine) in chocolate far more slowly than we do. It builds up and overstimulates the heart and nervous system — vomiting, restlessness, racing heart, tremors, and in severe cases seizures.
Darker is deadlier
Baking chocolate and cocoa powder are the most dangerous, dark chocolate next, milk chocolate less so, and white chocolate barely counts (though the fat and sugar can still cause pancreatitis). A few M&Ms is a very different event for a Great Dane than a Chihuahua.
What to do
Note the type and amount eaten and your dog's weight, then call your vet or a poison hotline — they'll calculate the actual risk. Symptoms can take 6–12 hours to appear, so don't be reassured by a normal-looking dog an hour later.
High-risk seasons
Halloween, Valentine's Day, Easter and Christmas produce predictable spikes in chocolate calls. Counter-surf-proof your holidays: candy bowls up high, trick-or-treat bags behind closed doors.
