Why Winter Makes Arthritic Pets Ache More (and What Helps)
The winter effect
Cold thickens joint fluid, muscles tense, and activity drops — the combination makes arthritic mornings visibly harder. If your senior 'ages five years' each winter, that's flare, not fate, and it's manageable.
Warmth as therapy
Draft-free orthopedic beds away from tiles, a heated pet bed or safely warmed pad for old hips, sweaters for lean or thin-coated seniors, and warm-up time before walks. Never place pets directly on heaters or unwrapped hot bottles — thin senior skin burns easily.
Keep moving anyway
Motion remains the medicine: shorter, more frequent gentle walks in the warmer midday hours, indoor games and stair-free play on bad-weather days, and traction on cold slick floors. A week on the couch costs a month of mobility.
Adjust the plan seasonally
Many vets tune pain management up for winter — timing doses before the stiff morning hours, adding omega-3s, or scheduling a rehab or laser course through the cold months. If winter mornings look painful, that's a phone call, not a season to endure.
