DIY Dog Bed From Things You Already Own

Good dog beds are expensive and most dogs destroy at least one. These three cost very little, wash easily, and can be rebuilt in an afternoon.

1. The duvet cover bed

Take an old duvet cover, stuff it with clean offcuts — old towels, worn-out jerseys, cut-up blankets, the foam from a dead couch cushion. Sew or safety-pin the open end closed, then stitch two or three lines across the middle so the filling cannot bunch into one corner. The whole thing goes in the wash and you can restuff it forever.

2. The tyre bed

An old car tyre, scrubbed clean and dried, makes an almost indestructible bed frame. Cut a circle of shade cloth or heavy fabric slightly larger than the inner diameter and cable-tie it through holes punched around the rim to make a taut base, then lay a folded blanket over it. It lifts the dog off cold concrete, air moves underneath in summer, and it will outlive the dog. Paint the outside if you want it to look intentional.

3. The orthopaedic version for older dogs

Arthritic dogs need support, not softness. A deep fluffy bed lets a stiff dog sink and then struggle to get out. Buy a slab of high-density foam from a foam and upholstery shop — most South African towns have one, and offcuts are cheap. Cut it to size with a bread knife, wrap it in a plastic bag as a waterproof layer, then a fitted pillowcase over that. Low sides so the dog can walk on rather than climb in.

Placement matters more than the bed

Dogs choose location over comfort almost every time. Put the bed where the family is, out of the walkway, away from the door in winter and out of afternoon sun in summer. Old dogs want to be near you and off slippery tiles — a bed on a rug beats a better bed on a slick floor.

Safety notes

No loose buttons, zips or foam chunks with a dog that chews. Beanbag beans are dangerous if swallowed and a nightmare if a bag bursts. If your dog eats bedding, use a flat folded blanket you can replace cheaply rather than anything stuffed.
