Doberman End-of-Life: DCM, Wobbler and What Cremation Costs
Dilated cardiomyopathy
DCM is the single biggest killer of Dobermans and it is frequently silent until it is not. A Doberman who collapses, coughs at night, or becomes suddenly exercise-intolerant needs a cardiac workup urgently. Sudden death from DCM is common in the breed, which means many Doberman owners face a loss with no warning at all.
Wobbler syndrome
Cervical spondylomyelopathy causes a wobbling, uncoordinated back end that worsens over months. When a Doberman can no longer stand or toilet without falling, and surgery is not an option, that is a legitimate end-of-life conversation. Ask your vet directly where on that curve your dog sits.
Cremation costs
At 32–45kg a Doberman is a large dog: roughly R2,500–R4,400 for individual cremation with ashes returned in South Africa, R500–R1,700 communal, plus R400–R850 collection.
If it was sudden
Sudden cardiac death leaves no chance to prepare, no lock of fur taken, no plan. If your Doberman died at home unexpectedly, take the fur now before you phone anyone — it is the one thing that becomes impossible once they have been collected.
Something with their name on it
We press your pet’s name onto a small paw print keychain by hand, in one of ten colours, and post it anywhere in South Africa. R299 plus R73 delivery, or two for R449 delivered free.
