Does Pet Insurance Cover Euthanasia and Cremation?

Many South African pet insurance policies do cover euthanasia when it’s medically justified, as part of treatment for a covered condition. Cremation and burial, however, are frequently excluded or only covered up to a small set amount — policies vary widely, so this is one to check rather than assume.

How to check before you need to

Look in your policy wording for ‘euthanasia’, ‘cremation’, ‘burial’ or ‘end-of-life’. Note any rand limit and whether it applies only to illness-related euthanasia versus old age. If your pet is ageing, it’s worth knowing this now, not in the moment.

If cremation isn’t covered, you can still keep the cost down by choosing communal, or by setting aside a small amount so the bill never comes as a shock.
