Is My Dog the Right Weight? The Hands-On Check

The problem hiding in plain sight

Well over half of dogs and cats are overweight, yet most owners rate their pet as just right. Extra weight quietly shortens lifespan and worsens arthritis, breathing and diabetes. The good news: you can assess it yourself in under a minute.

The three-point feel test

Run your hands over the ribs — you should feel them easily under a thin layer, like the back of your hand. Look from above for a waist that tucks in behind the ribs. From the side, the belly should tuck up, not hang level. No waist and hard-to-find ribs mean it's time to act.

Small changes, measured

If your pet needs to lose weight, measure meals with a proper cup or scale rather than eyeballing, and count treats — they should be under a tenth of daily calories. Cutting portions modestly and adding gentle activity usually does it. Crash diets are dangerous, especially for cats.

Track and recheck

Weigh monthly and repeat the hands-on test. Aim for slow, steady loss and celebrate small wins. A lean pet moves more comfortably, plays longer, and often gains years — it's one of the most powerful things you control.

If the day is coming

Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
