Your Dog Isn't Eating: When to Worry

Common, less-worrying reasons

Dogs skip meals for plenty of harmless reasons: hot weather, a bit of fussiness, a recent big treat, mild tummy upset, a new food they’re unsure of, or stress from a change at home. A single missed meal in an otherwise bright, playful dog is rarely an emergency.

The context matters as much as the appetite — a dog who’s off their food but still bouncy is very different from one who’s off their food and flat.

When it's a red flag

Call the vet if your dog won’t eat for more than about 24 hours, or sooner if there are other signs: vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, a swollen or painful belly, straining, pale gums, or obvious discomfort. Not eating plus any of those is a vet visit, not a wait-and-see. Puppies, seniors, and small breeds have less reserve, so don’t leave them as long.

A hard, swollen belly with unproductive retching is an immediate emergency — that can be bloat.

Tempting a healthy dog to eat

If your vet is happy there’s nothing serious, you can gently tempt appetite: warm the food slightly, add a little plain cooked chicken or a splash of low-salt broth, and feed in a calm spot. But appetite is one of the best early-warning signs of illness, so persistent loss of appetite always earns a check rather than endless home tempting.
