Dog Park Etiquette: The Unwritten Rules

Before you go in

A dog park is only as good as its people. The basics: your dog should have reliable-ish recall and be reasonably social, be up to date on vaccinations and parasite prevention, and be sterilised or carefully managed. Leave puppies who haven’t finished their shots at home, and don’t bring a female in season. Watch through the fence first — if the vibe looks rough, come back later.

While you're there

Watch your dog, not your phone. Most incidents happen because owners aren’t paying attention. Learn to read the play — loose, bouncy and taking turns is good; stiff, pinning, or one dog constantly fleeing is not. Interrupt early and calmly. Pick up every mess, every time. And don’t bring high-value treats or toys into a group of strange dogs — that’s how squabbles start.

Know your own dog’s limits and leave before they’re overtired or overwhelmed.

When to skip the park

The dog park isn’t for every dog, and that’s fine. Nervous, reactive, or recovering dogs often do far better on quiet lead walks or with one trusted playmate. A good owner knows the difference — forcing a stressed dog to ‘socialise’ usually backfires.
