Dog Vaccination Schedule and Costs in South Africa
Vaccination in South Africa is not just good practice. Rabies vaccination is a legal requirement for dogs and cats under the Animal Diseases Act, and in some provinces you can be fined for an unvaccinated animal. It is also the cheapest thing on this list.
Puppy schedule
Most South African vets follow a schedule close to this:
- 6 to 8 weeks — first combination vaccine, covering distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis and parainfluenza.
- 10 to 12 weeks — second combination, plus first rabies in many practices.
- 14 to 16 weeks — final combination. This is the one that matters most and the one most often skipped.
- Around 12 months — booster, then boosters at intervals your vet recommends.
Immunity is not complete until roughly two weeks after the final puppy shot. That is the window where parvo catches people out.
Roughly what it costs
A single vaccination consultation commonly runs somewhere between R350 and R700 depending on the practice and the province, with rabies often cheaper. A full puppy course usually lands somewhere between R1,000 and R2,000 all-in. Annual boosters for an adult are typically one consultation a year.
Free and low-cost rabies drives run regularly through the SPCA, municipal clinics and welfare organisations, particularly around World Rabies Day at the end of September. Watch local Facebook community groups.
Kennel cough
Not part of the core schedule but usually required by boarding kennels, daycare and some training classes, and often needed at least a week before boarding. If you plan to board over December, book the vaccination in November.
What to bring and keep
Keep the vaccination card. You will need it for boarding, for travel, for some estate and complex applications, and for any cross-border movement. If you lose it, your vet can usually reprint from their records — ask before you need it urgently.
If money is tight
Phone your local SPCA, a welfare clinic like a mobile or township clinic in your area, or a veterinary teaching hospital. Subsidised vaccination is widely available in South Africa and no one will judge you for asking. An unvaccinated dog is a far more expensive dog later.
