Why the first night is hard

Your puppy has just left their mother and littermates for the first time ever. The crying isn’t manipulation — it’s genuine distress at being suddenly alone. Understanding that changes how you respond: the goal on night one is comfort and safety, not tough love.

What actually helps

Keep them close — a crate or bed in your room, beside you, so they can hear and smell you. Many puppies settle far faster within reach of a person than shut away alone. A warm, snug bed, a soft toy, and something that smells of home or littermates all help. A last toilet break right before bed, and be ready for one or two through the night — a young puppy simply can’t hold it yet.

Keep night-time toilet trips boring: outside, wee, quiet praise, straight back to bed. No play, no fuss, so they learn night is for sleeping.

The first week

Expect a few broken nights, then rapid improvement as the routine and the reassurance of your presence take hold. Gradually, if you wish, you can move the bed towards its permanent spot. Patience now saves weeks of trouble later.
