Flying With Pets in South Africa: Rules, Costs and How It Works
How pets fly
On South African domestic flights, most pets travel as checked baggage in the climate-controlled hold in an approved crate; very small pets may occasionally travel in the cabin, but this is limited. Assistance animals are handled separately. Rules, crate specs and costs differ by airline, so confirm directly with yours well ahead — don’t assume.
You’ll need an airline-approved travel crate: sturdy, well-ventilated, big enough for your pet to stand, turn and lie down, with secure water access.
Preparing your pet
Get the crate early and make it a happy place with familiar bedding, so the airport isn’t the first time inside it. Feed lightly a few hours before rather than right before, exercise them beforehand, and attach clear ID and your contact details. Talk to your vet about whether sedation is wise — often it’s not recommended for flying, as it can affect breathing at altitude, so follow professional advice rather than sedating by default.
Snub-nosed breeds (bulldogs, pugs, Persians) face extra risk in the hold and some airlines restrict them — check carefully.
Costs and paperwork
Budget for the crate plus the airline’s pet fee, which varies. For international travel the picture is far bigger — health certificates, import permits, sometimes titre tests and quarantine — and a specialist pet-relocation agent is usually worth it. For domestic hops, it’s mostly the crate, the fee, and good preparation.
Where Ease The Paw fits in
Ease The Paw is a South African pet-care community and end-of-life coordination service. Members get a full toolkit — health records, care reminders, a symptom checker, breed and feeding guides, trackers and more — and when the hardest day eventually comes, we coordinate everything with one WhatsApp. For now, though, this guide is here to help you enjoy the good years.
If the day is coming
Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
