Grooming Older Pets: Gentler Tools, Bigger Payoff
Why seniors need help
Stiff spines end the acrobatic self-grooming of youth — senior cats especially develop the telltale scruffy back and hindquarters. Skin thins, coats mat faster, and nails overgrow as activity drops. Grooming becomes assisted living, done with love.
Adapt the session
Short and frequent beats long and thorough: a few gentle minutes daily with a soft brush, on a supportive surface, with breaks and treats. Support joints (don't stretch old limbs into position), and stop before tolerance runs out — you can continue tomorrow.
The senior specifics
Nails need trimming more often (less wear, more clenching); sanitary trims keep less-flexible pets clean; matted spots should be teased or clipped, never yanked. Bath rarely, dry thoroughly, and warm the room first — old bodies chill fast.
Grooming as screening
Your hands will find what eyes miss: new lumps, weight loss along the spine, sore spots that flinch, skin changes. A pet that suddenly resents being touched somewhere is reporting pain. Every grooming session is a health check wearing a softer name.
