The two big risks: the gate and the food

Visitors mean doors and gates opening and closing all day, and that’s how pets slip out and go missing — it’s the number-one holiday pet emergency. Put one person, or a closed internal door, in charge of the exit. The second risk is food: rich leftovers, cooked bones, chocolate, grapes, onions and xylitol-sweetened treats are all common at gatherings and all dangerous. Brief your guests kindly: no feeding the pets.

A little planning around these two things prevents almost every holiday mishap.

Give them an escape

Even social pets get overwhelmed by a house full of strangers, noise and children. Set up a quiet room with their bed, water, a favourite chew and a ‘do not disturb’ rule, and let them retreat there. Cats especially will thank you — make sure their safe room stays off-limits to guests. A pet who can opt out is a pet who stays calm.

Watch children and pets together closely; excited kids and overstimulated animals are a predictable recipe for a nip.

For anxious pets

If your pet finds visitors genuinely frightening, plan ahead: exercise them well beforehand, use their safe room from the start, and for severe anxiety, ask your vet about calming options in advance. And keep their ID and microchip details current before the season — just in case the gate wins.
