Home Burial for Pets: A Practical, Gentle Guide

Check before you dig

Home burial is legal in many places but regulated: rules commonly cover property ownership (not rentals), depth, and distance from water sources and utility lines. A quick check of local regulations saves heartache.

Doing it properly

Bury at least three feet (a meter) deep, away from water and buried services, wrapped in something biodegradable — a blanket or wooden box rather than plastic. Placing paving or a heavy planter above protects the site. If your pet was euthanized, deep burial matters: the medication can harm wildlife that disturbs a shallow grave.

Marking the place

A stone, a planted tree or rose, a corner of the garden that becomes theirs. Many families find watching something grow there does more healing than any purchased memorial.

When home burial isn't possible

Renters and frequent movers often choose cremation with ashes kept or scattered — a memory you can take with you. Pet cemeteries offer permanence with visiting rights. There is no hierarchy of love in these choices; only what fits your life.

Something with their name on it

We press your pet’s name onto a small paw print keychain by hand, in one of ten colours, and post it anywhere in South Africa. R299 plus R73 delivery, or two for R449 delivered free.
