How Long Can You Keep Your Pet at Home After They Die?

The short answer

Kept genuinely cool, most pets can stay at home for 12 to 24 hours without difficulty. In a cold Highveld winter, or in a garage overnight in the Cape, longer is often fine. In summer heat or humid coastal conditions, aim for the same day. Temperature is the only real variable.

Why you might want the time

Some families need a few hours to absorb it. Others want to wait for a partner to get home from work, or for a child to come back from school to say goodbye. These are good reasons and you are entitled to them. There is no rule requiring an immediate collection and no one will judge you for taking the evening.

What you will notice

Stiffening begins within a few hours and passes again after roughly a day. Fluid may be released from the mouth, nose or bladder — place a towel underneath. The body will cool and settle. None of this is a sign of anything wrong, and knowing to expect it makes it much less frightening.

Making the space right

Their own blanket, their own bed, somewhere quiet. Some families light a candle or let the other pets come in. If children are saying goodbye, tell them beforehand that the body will feel cold and stiff and will not look asleep. Children handle honesty far better than surprises.
