How to Trim Dog Nails Without a Fight

Overgrown nails are not cosmetic. They change how the foot loads, push the toes sideways, cause pain in the wrist and shoulder over time, and on tiled floors they take away grip an older dog badly needs. If you can hear clicking on tiles, they are too long.

Finding the quick

The quick is the blood vessel and nerve inside the nail. On white nails it is the pink line — cut a few millimetres beyond it. On black nails you cannot see it, so cut a very small slice at a time and look at the cut end: pale and chalky means keep going, and when a small grey or black dot appears in the centre, stop. That dot is the quick approaching.

Cut at a slight angle following the natural curve, not straight across.

If you cut the quick

Stay calm — it bleeds impressively and looks worse than it is. Press styptic powder into the nail, or if you have none, cornflour or plain flour packed firmly against the tip and held for a couple of minutes. Keep the dog quiet for half an hour so a clot forms. Then give a treat and stop for the day; carrying on teaches the dog that the pain has no end.

Rehabilitating a dog that hates it

Split it over two weeks and do nothing but build tolerance:

Day one to three: touch a paw, treat, let go. Ten seconds total.
Day four to six: hold the paw, treat. Then hold and touch a nail with the clipper closed, treat.
Day seven onwards: clip a single nail, treat, walk away. One nail a day is progress.

Do it after a walk when the dog is tired, on a non-slip surface, from beside the dog rather than looming over the front. Many dogs are far easier lying on their side on a bed than standing.

Grinder or clipper

Rotary grinders take off less at a time and are much harder to over-cut with, which suits black nails and nervous owners. The noise and vibration need their own introduction, so start with it running in the next room. Scissor-type clippers give more control than the guillotine type on larger nails.

Do not forget dewclaws

The dewclaw on the inside of the leg touches nothing and keeps growing until it curls into the pad. Check it every time.
