Almost every family wonders this and almost nobody asks, because it feels like an accusation. It is not. It is a fair question about a service you cannot witness, and any good crematorium expects it and answers it without defensiveness.

What to ask, specifically

What identification travels with my pet from collection to cremation? Do you cremate individually in a single chamber? Can I see your process, or visit? Is the identification returned with the ashes? South African operators running proper individual cremations use numbered metal discs that survive the chamber, and many return that disc in the box.

Witnessed cremation

Some crematoriums allow you to be present, either at the point your pet is placed into the chamber or for the whole process. Not all offer it and it is not for everyone, but if the uncertainty is going to sit with you, ask. Families who take that option almost always say it laid the question to rest permanently.

If you feel something went wrong

Ask directly and in writing. Ask for the identification number, the date and time of the cremation, and their process documentation. A legitimate operator will supply it. If the answers are evasive, you are entitled to raise it with the practice that referred you, and to warn other pet owners honestly.
