IVDD in Dachshunds: Protecting That Long Back

Why the long back is the weak spot

Dachshunds — along with corgis, bassets and a few others — are built long and low, and that famous shape comes with a famous risk: intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). The discs that cushion the spine can bulge or rupture, pressing on the spinal cord. It ranges from painful to, at worst, paralysing, and it’s the single biggest health concern of the breed.

Around one in four dachshunds will show some sign of IVDD in their lives, so prevention isn’t optional — it’s part of owning the breed.

The early warning signs

Watch for a reluctance to jump or climb stairs, a hunched back, shivering or crying when picked up, a wobbly or dragging back leg, or sudden reluctance to move. Any of these — especially a sudden change — needs a vet the same day, because with spinal problems, early treatment protects the outcome. Never wait and see with a dog who suddenly can’t use their back legs.

IVDD is one case where digging in fast genuinely changes whether a dog walks again.

Protecting the back for life

Keep your dachshund lean — extra weight is direct strain on the spine. Ban jumping on and off furniture (use ramps or steps), discourage stairs, support the whole body when lifting (never dangle them), and use a harness rather than a neck collar. These habits, started early, dramatically cut the risk of a serious episode.
