Kennel Cough in Dogs: Causes, Care and Prevention
If your dog suddenly develops a dry, honking cough — often after a stay at kennels, a visit to the park, or a grooming session — kennel cough is the likely culprit. It's the doggy equivalent of a common cold: highly contagious, usually mild, but worth understanding.
What it is
Kennel cough is a contagious infection of the airways caused by a mix of bacteria and viruses. It spreads easily wherever dogs mix, which is how it got its name.
Signs to look for
- A persistent, forceful cough — often sounding like a honk or a gag.
- Retching, sometimes bringing up a little foam.
- Otherwise usually bright, eating and behaving normally.
Caring for your dog
- Rest and avoid exercise while they recover.
- Use a harness instead of a collar to avoid pressure on the throat.
- Keep them away from other dogs until fully better — it's very contagious.
- Keep them comfortable, hydrated and in clean air (avoid smoke and dust).
When to see the vet
Most healthy adult dogs recover in a week or two. But see your vet if the cough is severe, lasts longer than that, or if your dog goes off their food, becomes lethargic, breathes rapidly, or is a puppy, senior or has other health issues — these dogs can develop complications and may need treatment.
Prevention
There's a kennel cough vaccine, often required by boarding kennels and doggy daycares — worth asking your vet about if your dog socialises a lot. Good ventilation and not sharing water bowls with unknown dogs also help.
