Planning a Last Good Season With an Old Pet

Drop the rules that no longer matter

A dog with months left does not need to stay off the bed, off the couch, or off the beach. Diet restrictions imposed for long-term health are usually irrelevant now — ask your vet, but for most terminal cases the answer is let them eat what they enjoy. This is the one stretch where indulgence is genuinely the right medicine.

Keep the routine that does

Structure still comforts animals, particularly dogs. Same feeding times, same short walk even if it is only to the gate. What changes is the ambition, not the shape of the day.

Do the small things, not the big ones

People plan elaborate bucket lists and then discover the pet is happiest lying in a sunny patch with the family around. A car ride with the window down, a beach if it is close, their favourite person visiting. Small and familiar beats big and stressful for almost every old animal.

Take the photographs now

Not posed ones — ordinary ones. Asleep in their usual spot. The way they wait at the door. Their paws. Their face close up. Families almost universally say they wish they had taken more ordinary photographs and fewer special-occasion ones. Do it this week.
