Lumps and Bumps: Which Ones to Watch and Which to Test
You can't diagnose by touch
Soft and movable is often a harmless fatty lipoma; firm and fixed raises concern — but exceptions abound in both directions, and even vets can't reliably tell by feel. The only honest answer comes from cells under a microscope.
The needle test
A fine-needle aspirate is quick, cheap, usually needs no sedation, and identifies many lumps on the spot — including mast cell tumors, the great impersonators that can look and feel like anything. Many vets suggest testing any new lump, especially ones growing or bothering the pet.
Measure, map, monitor
Keep a simple lump map: photo, location, and size (compare to coins) with dates. 'It's gotten bigger' becomes objective instead of a guess. Show the map at every checkup.
Red flags for right now
Rapid growth, bleeding or ulceration, fixation to underlying tissue, lumps in the mouth or around the anus, or a pet losing weight alongside — book promptly. Caught early, even nasty lumps are frequently curable with surgery alone.
