What they are

Mobile and outreach clinics are veterinary services delivered from a vehicle or a temporary site rather than a fixed practice, usually run by welfare organisations and staffed by registered veterinarians and veterinary nurses.

They operate across South Africa, particularly in townships, informal settlements, rural districts and areas far from a fixed practice.

What they typically offer

• Consultations and basic treatment
• Vaccination, including free rabies campaigns
• Deworming and tick and flea treatment
• Sterilisation, sometimes on site and sometimes by transport to a base clinic
• Wound care and minor procedures
• Referral onward where a case needs hospitalisation

Fees are typically means-tested or donation-based, commonly R0 to R250 for a consultation.

Who runs them

SPCA branches run outreach across most provinces. So do CLAW in Johannesburg, Mdzananda in Khayelitsha, and a substantial number of provincial and district welfare organisations.

Onderstepoort runs community outreach as part of its teaching programme. Some private practices also run periodic outreach days.

Find yours by phoning your local SPCA and asking for their outreach schedule, or by searching your area name with animal welfare clinic.

Using them well

Arrive early. Queues form and clinics run to capacity rather than to a booking system.

Bring any previous vaccination card or records you have.

Bring a lead and collar, or a carrier for a cat. A crate or a pillowcase works if you do not have a carrier.

Be honest about what you can pay. These clinics are designed around exactly that conversation.

What they cannot do

Outreach clinics generally cannot hospitalise, operate on complex cases, run advanced imaging or provide overnight care. They will refer where a case needs it.

For a genuine emergency, go to an emergency practice rather than waiting for the next outreach day. Ask about payment arrangements when you get there.

If you can afford private care, use it and leave the outreach capacity for those who cannot. That is how these services stay available.
