What Pet Vaccinations Cost in South Africa
The puppy and kitten course
A full primary course is three visits for puppies and two to three for kittens, spaced three to four weeks apart, usually finishing between twelve and sixteen weeks.
Expect roughly R450 to R850 per visit at a general practice, so R1,300 to R2,500 for the complete course. That normally includes the consultation, the vaccine and a deworming dose.
Annual boosters
An adult booster visit runs roughly R500 to R900, including the consultation and examination. Many practices bundle the rabies vaccine into this at little or no extra cost.
The examination is genuinely the valuable half of that visit. It is often where a lump, a heart murmur or dental disease is first picked up, years before you would have noticed.
Rabies is not optional here
Rabies vaccination is compulsory for dogs and cats in South Africa under the Animal Diseases Act. Rabies is present in the country, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and parts of the Eastern Cape, and it is invariably fatal once symptoms appear.
State veterinary services and municipalities run free rabies campaigns regularly. If cost is the barrier, phone your local state vet office and ask when the next one is.
What the core vaccines cover
- Dogs — distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis and parainfluenza in one combination, plus rabies
- Cats — feline herpesvirus, calicivirus and panleukopenia, plus rabies
- Optional extras — kennel cough for dogs that board or go to parks, and feline leukaemia for cats that go outdoors
Weighing it against the alternative
Treating parvovirus in an unvaccinated puppy costs R6,000 to R20,000 and is not always survivable. Distemper is worse. The full vaccination course costs less than a single night of that hospitalisation.
If the timing of the full course is unaffordable, ask your vet which visit matters most and space the rest. A partly vaccinated puppy is meaningfully better protected than an unvaccinated one.
If the day is coming
Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
