Pet-Proofing and Prep: Getting Your Home Ready for a Rescue
Safety sweep
Secure trash cans, move medications and cleaning products up high, hide cables, check the fence line inch by inch (rescues test fences), remove toxic plants, and gate any no-go zones. Assume a clever, anxious explorer is coming — because one is.
The landing zone
Set up one calm base: bed, water, appropriate food (ask what they're currently eating — switch gradually to avoid stomach upset), a crate or den option, and for cats a litter box far from food. New pets relax faster in a small kingdom than a big confusing one.
The supply list
Collar or harness with an ID tag ready for day one, leash and spare, enrichment (chews, puzzle feeder, wand toy), enzymatic cleaner for accidents, and grooming basics. Skip the fifty-toy shopping spree — you don't know their taste yet.
The people prep
Family meeting first: agree on rules (couch or not?), the same command words, who feeds and walks, and a hands-off policy for the settling weeks — especially for children. A consistent household is the greatest gift a confused rescue can receive.
If the day is coming
