How allergies look in dogs

Dogs don't usually sneeze — they itch. Paw licking and chewing, face rubbing, recurrent ear infections, armpit and belly rashes, and hot spots. Spring-and-fall patterns point to pollens; year-round itch suggests dust mites or food.

Break the cycle

Wipe paws and belly after outdoor time on high-pollen days, bathe weekly with a soothing veterinary shampoo, wash bedding hot, and stay ruthless about flea prevention — flea allergy amplifies everything else.

Modern itch medicine

Beyond antihistamines (which often underwhelm in dogs), vets now have targeted daily tablets and long-acting injections that stop itch at the nerve-signal level, plus allergy testing and immunotherapy ('allergy shots') that treat the cause rather than the symptom.

When to escalate

If your dog is scratching through the night, staining paws pink, or on their third ear infection this year, stop cycling shampoos and see the vet. Chronic allergies are managed, not cured — but managed well, dogs are transformed.
