Senior Cat Care: A Complete Guide to the Later Years

When is a cat considered senior?

Cats are generally called mature from around 7–10 years, senior from 11–14, and geriatric at 15 and beyond. A well-cared-for indoor cat often reaches the late teens, and plenty pass 20. So ‘senior’ isn’t old age — it’s the long, rewarding final third of a cat’s life, and it’s the stretch where good care makes the biggest difference.

The shift is gradual. Your cat won’t suddenly seem old; instead you’ll notice small things — sleeping more, jumping less, a little stiffness in the mornings.

The health changes to watch for

Three conditions dominate the senior years: kidney disease, overactive thyroid, and arthritis. The early clues are easy to miss — drinking more water, losing weight while still eating, yowling at night, or no longer jumping to a favourite windowsill. Dental disease is almost universal too, and quietly makes cats miserable.

None of these are reasons to panic. Caught early, all of them are manageable for a good while — which is exactly why senior cats benefit from a vet check every six months, not once a year.

Everyday care that helps

Keep water easy to reach and consider a fountain — senior cats often don’t drink enough. Provide soft, warm beds away from draughts, and add a step or low ramp to favourite perches so stiff joints don’t end the climbing. Groom them more, since older cats groom themselves less. And weigh them monthly — the scale catches trouble the eye misses under all that fur.

Litter trays matter more now: lower sides for achy joints, and more trays, since a senior cat may not make it across the house in time.
