The Senior-Friendly Litter Box Setup (Fixes Most 'Accidents')
It's rarely spite
A senior cat toileting outside the tray is almost always telling you something physical: the sides are too high for arthritic hips, the box is too far away, or urinating hurts. Rule out medical causes first — a vet visit before a behaviour plan, always.
The senior setup
Low entry (5–8cm sides, or cut a doorway into a storage tub), one tray per floor so nobody has to manage stairs in a hurry, uncovered so there's no awkward crouch-and-turn, and larger than you think — old cats need room to position without pain.
Litter and placement
Soft, fine litter is gentler on sensitive paws than coarse pellets. Keep trays away from noisy appliances and food, in spots with an easy escape route. If your cat sleeps upstairs and the only tray is downstairs, you've built an obstacle course for arthritic joints.
When it's still happening
If accidents continue after the setup fix, that's diagnostic information: urinary infections, kidney disease, diabetes and cognitive decline all show up this way. Track when and where it happens — your vet can do a lot with that pattern.
