Making Vet Visits Easier for a Senior Cat
The senior paradox
Just when checkups become most important — twice yearly from age ten — many cats become hardest to transport. Stiff joints make the carrier-stuffing wrestle genuinely painful, and stress skews exam findings like blood pressure and glucose.
Rehabilitate the carrier
Leave the carrier out permanently as furniture: soft bedding inside, occasional treats tossed in, door removed or tied open. A carrier that's a sleeping spot beats one that appears only on doom days. Top-loading carriers are far easier on arthritic cats than front-only ones.
The trip itself
A towel over the carrier reduces visual stress. A synthetic feline pheromone spray in the carrier fifteen minutes before leaving helps many cats. Book quiet appointment slots, keep the carrier off the floor in the waiting room, and ask if your clinic has cat-only hours — many now do.
Bring your notes
The most valuable thing you can carry in is information: monthly weights, drinking changes, litter habits, the jumping-and-grooming audit. A senior cat exam plus a good owner history catches what neither finds alone.
