Making Your Home Work for an Old Dog

Most South African homes are tiled, and tiles are the single biggest problem for an arthritic dog. A dog that cannot get purchase becomes reluctant to move, loses muscle, and gets weaker — a spiral that starts with flooring.

Fix the floors first

Lay cheap rubber-backed runners or yoga mats along the routes the dog actually uses: bed to door, bed to water, around the corner they slip on. It does not need to look good. This one change often produces a visible improvement in confidence within days.

Keep the paw fur trimmed between the pads — long fur on tiles is like walking on skis. Toe nails short, because long nails change how the foot loads and reduce grip further.

Beds and warmth

A firm supportive bed, not a deep soft one that a stiff dog sinks into and struggles out of. Low sides so they can walk on. Out of draughts, off cold tiles, and away from the door in winter. A thick foam slab in a washable cover works better than most bought beds.

Warmth genuinely helps arthritic joints. A jersey on cold mornings and a bed placed in morning sun makes a real difference on the Highveld.

Steps, ramps and heights

A ramp into the bakkie or the boot saves both the dog's joints and your back. Pet steps to a favourite couch, if you allow it, prevent the jump down that does the damage — landing is harder on joints than jumping up. Block access to stairs if they are becoming risky, or carry.

Raised food and water bowls help dogs with neck or elbow pain, though they are not right for every dog — ask your vet.

Toileting

Older dogs need more frequent trips outside, especially at night. Move the door they use to the closest one. Consider a covered area outside so they are not asked to go out in cold rain. Accidents are usually a mobility or medical problem, not naughtiness — investigate rather than scold.

Do not stop exercising them

Short, frequent, gentle walks maintain muscle, and muscle supports joints. Two or three ten-minute walks beat one long one. Swimming and controlled lead walking on grass are excellent. What to avoid is the weekend warrior pattern — nothing all week and a long hike on Sunday.

And treat the pain

All of this helps, and none of it substitutes for veterinary pain management. Arthritis medication transforms most old dogs, and owners routinely say they wish they had started a year earlier.
