Many popular houseplants are toxic to cats and dogs if chewed, and curious pets — especially cats and teething puppies — love a nibble. You don't have to give up plants, but it's worth knowing which ones sit within reach and what they can do.

The ones to watch

Lilies are the standout danger: even a little — pollen, a leaf, the vase water — can cause fatal kidney failure in cats, making them a true emergency. Others to be wary of include dieffenbachia, philodendron, pothos, sago palm, and aloe. Some cause drooling and mouth pain; others affect the heart or organs.

If your pet nibbles

If you suspect your pet has eaten a toxic plant, don't wait for symptoms — phone your vet or an animal poison line with the plant's name ready. Bring a photo or sample. For lilies and cats especially, hours count. Never induce vomiting unless a professional tells you to.

Build a safer indoor jungle

Move risky plants well out of reach or rehome them, and choose pet-safe greenery — spider plants, calatheas, areca palms and many herbs are gentler options. Offer cats their own pot of cat grass to satisfy the urge to chew, and keep the tempting ones off the menu.
