Taking the Terror Out of Vet Visits
Start at home
Leave the cat carrier out year-round as a feeding station and bed, so it stops predicting doom. For dogs, practice the exam at home: touch paws, look in ears, lift lips — one second at a time, paid in treats.
Happy visits
Ask your clinic if you can drop in occasionally just for treats and a hello on the scale — no needles, no exam. A few happy visits dilute a lifetime of scary ones. Many clinics now hold fear-free certifications and will gladly help.
Day-of tactics
Skip breakfast so treats hit harder (and nausea is less likely), bring their own high-value snacks, cover the cat carrier with a towel, and wait in the car instead of a loud lobby if your pet finds it stressful.
Medication is not cheating
For pets with real panic, vets can prescribe pre-visit calming medication that transforms the experience. A relaxed pet gets a better exam, safer handling, and a shorter appointment — everyone wins, especially them.
Something with their name on it
We press your pet’s name onto a small paw print keychain by hand, in one of ten colours, and post it anywhere in South Africa. R299 plus R73 delivery, or two for R449 delivered free.
