What Age Is a Dog Considered Senior?

It depends on size

There’s no single number, because size drives ageing. As a guide: small dogs (under 10kg) are senior from about 10–11 years, medium dogs from about 8–10, large dogs from about 7–8, and giant breeds as early as 5–6. A Great Dane is a senior at an age when a Chihuahua is barely middle-aged.

It’s the opposite of what many people expect — the bigger the dog, the shorter the life and the earlier old age arrives.

The signs your dog has become a senior

Grey around the muzzle is the obvious one, but the real signals are behavioural: sleeping more, slower on walks, stiffness after rest, cloudy eyes, reduced hearing, and sometimes a little confusion or restlessness at night. None of these mean anything is wrong — they’re simply the body and mind ageing.

The senior label matters because it changes what good care looks like: twice-yearly vet visits, joint support, a closer eye on weight, and a little more patience.

Making the senior years good ones

Most dogs have years of happy life left when they cross into ‘senior’. Keep them lean, keep them moving gently, warm their joints in winter, and catch problems early with regular check-ups. Old age is not an illness — it’s a stage to care for well.
