Your Dog Swallowed a Sock: What Happens Next

Socks, underwear, corn cobs, peach pips, toy squeakers, hair ties, and in South Africa specifically, braai skewers and the plastic wrapping off meat. Foreign body obstruction is one of the most frequent emergency surgeries in small animal practice.

Phone the vet immediately

Do not wait to see what happens. In the first hour or two, a vet may be able to induce vomiting safely or retrieve the object with an endoscope, which is dramatically cheaper and less invasive than surgery. Once it has moved into the intestine, that window has closed.

Tell them what it was, roughly what size, and when. Take the matching sock so they can see the size.

Do not induce vomiting yourself

Especially not for anything sharp, anything long and string-like, or if the dog is already unwell. Home remedies for inducing vomiting are unreliable and salt is genuinely dangerous.

The signs of obstruction

Repeated vomiting, especially unable to keep water down.
No appetite.
A hunched posture or a tense painful abdomen.
Lethargy.
Straining to pass stool, or no stool at all.
Restlessness and inability to settle.

These can take one to four days to appear. A dog that seemed fine on Monday can be critical by Wednesday.

String is worse than solid objects

String, thread, ribbon, dental floss and tinsel are called linear foreign bodies and they are far more dangerous. The intestine bunches up along the string and the string saws through the wall. If you see string hanging from either end of your animal, do not pull it — go straight to a vet.

Cost, honestly

Endoscopic retrieval in the first hours might cost a few thousand rand. Surgical removal of an obstructed intestine typically runs into tens of thousands, more if a section of bowel has died and needs resection. Acting fast is a financial decision as much as a medical one.

Prevention

Laundry baskets with lids. Bins that close. Socks off the floor. Supervise toy play and bin toys once they start coming apart. Some dogs are compulsive swallowers and need a basket muzzle on walks — that is not cruel, it is what keeps them alive.
