Personality beats appearance: ask staff which cats are confident, which are shy, which love laps and which prefer parallel living. An adult cat's temperament is visible now; a kitten's is a lottery ticket.

The setup

Before arrival: litter box in a quiet spot, food and water separated from it, a scratching post, a hiding place, and one small starter room. Cats conquer territory gradually — a whole house on day one is overwhelming, not generous.

The first two weeks

Let the cat set the pace. Sit nearby, read aloud, offer play with a wand toy, and let them approach first. A cat that hides for days is normal; food disappearing overnight is progress. Forced cuddles set you back weeks.

New-owner essentials

Register with a vet in week one, keep them indoors during settling, and learn the two golden signals: slow blinks mean trust, and a twitching tail means give me space. Master those and you're most of the way to fluent cat.
