The Boerboel: An Honest Owner's Guide

The boerboel is South Africa's own mastiff, bred on farms to guard property and family. They are magnificent dogs and they are not beginner dogs, and pretending otherwise does the breed no favours.

What you are taking on

An adult male runs roughly 65 to 90kg and stands to your hip. That is more dog than most people can physically restrain, which means training is not optional and must happen while the dog is small enough to manage. A boerboel that learned to pull at six months will drag you into a road at eighteen.

Temperament in a well-bred, well-raised boerboel is confident, calm and deeply attached to family. They are naturally territorial and naturally suspicious of strangers, which is the job they were bred for. Socialisation from eight weeks — people, other dogs, hats, wheelbarrows, delivery bikes, children — is what turns that into a stable adult rather than a reactive one.

Health to budget for

Hip and elbow dysplasia. Only buy from a breeder who screens and can show scores.
Bloat and gastric torsion. Deep-chested and at real risk. Learn the signs — unproductive retching, a swelling tense abdomen, restlessness — and treat it as a same-hour emergency. Ask your vet about preventive gastropexy at sterilisation.
Ectropion and entropion — eyelid problems needing surgical correction.
Heart conditions and joint arthritis in later life.

Everything costs more at this size: food, medication dosed by weight, anaesthetics, and boarding.

Growth matters more than in small dogs

Feed a large-breed puppy food, not an adult or a standard puppy formula. Overfeeding and excessive calcium during growth cause skeletal disease. Keep exercise moderate and avoid forced running, long hikes and repetitive jumping until growth plates close, usually around 18 months.

The legal side

South African law holds owners responsible for what their dogs do, and courts have taken a firm line on large guarding breeds. Secure fencing, a gate that cannot be pushed open, clear signage, and control at the gate are basic responsibilities. Check your household insurance and your municipality's by-laws, and be aware that many estates and complexes restrict large guarding breeds outright.

Lifespan and the ending

Nine to eleven years is typical, and giant breeds age early — a boerboel is a senior at seven. Plan for mobility support in the last years: rugs on tiles, a ramp into the bakkie, and a vet conversation about arthritis medication earlier than you think you need it.
