Rhodesian Ridgeback: What Owners Should Know

Bred in southern Africa to track and hold big game and to live alongside the family, the ridgeback is a genuinely southern African dog: athletic, heat-tolerant, independent and quietly stubborn.

Temperament

Calm and dignified indoors, and considerably more dog outdoors. They are affectionate with family, aloof with strangers, and rarely demonstrative. Ridgebacks were bred to make their own decisions at a distance from the handler, which means they will consider your instruction and sometimes decline. This is not stupidity; it is the job description.

They are usually good with children they are raised with, though a 40kg dog moving at speed is a knock-over risk with toddlers. Prey drive is strong — cats, chickens and small dogs need careful management, and recall around game is often unreliable.

Exercise reality

An hour a day minimum for an adult, ideally including a proper run in a safe enclosed space. Ridgebacks are sighthound-influenced and need to sprint. A ridgeback that only gets a suburban walk becomes destructive and vocal. They are also excellent running partners once mature, and they handle heat better than most breeds — though still not midday in Limpopo.

The health issue to screen for

Dermoid sinus is a breed-specific defect where a tube of skin extends inward toward the spine, sometimes connecting to the spinal cord. It is present at birth and requires surgery. Reputable breeders check every puppy at birth and do not sell affected pups without full disclosure. Ask the breeder directly and get it in writing.

Also screen for hip and elbow dysplasia, and be aware of hypothyroidism and bloat risk given the deep chest.

Living arrangements

They need secure fencing at least 1.8m high — ridgebacks jump and climb, and a bored one will leave. They are indoor dogs by preference and want to be with the family; a ridgeback left in a yard alone all day is a miserable and noisy animal.

Training approach

Reward-based, short sessions, and start young. They shut down with harsh handling and become evasive. Recall and lead work are the two to invest in, because an adult ridgeback that pulls is genuinely difficult to hold.
