Flat-Faced Breeds: Loving a Frenchie, Pug or Persian Responsibly

The anatomy problem

Bulldogs, pugs, Frenchies, boxers, Persians and other flat-faced breeds squeeze normal airway tissue into a shortened skull: narrow nostrils, long soft palates, small windpipes. The snorting many find cute is frequently the sound of hard work to breathe.

Signs it's more than snoring

Noisy breathing at rest, exercise intolerance, gagging or regurgitation, sleeping with a toy in the mouth or chin propped up (to keep the airway open), blue-tinged gums, or collapse in heat or excitement. Vets grade this as BOAS — brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome.

The non-negotiables

Heat is their enemy: these breeds dominate heatstroke statistics and are banned from aircraft cargo for a reason. Walk early or late, keep them lean (weight dramatically worsens BOAS), and use a harness, never a collar, on that compressed windpipe.

Surgery can transform them

Widening nostrils and shortening the soft palate — often done young — can turn a struggling dog into one that runs and sleeps quietly. If your flat-faced pet snores loudly at rest, ask for a BOAS assessment rather than accepting it as personality.
