How a Cat's Behaviour Changes With Age

The normal arc

Kittens are chaos; young adults (roughly 1–6 years) settle into confident, playful routines; mature cats (7–10) slow down a little; and seniors (11+) sleep more, play gently, and grow more attached to warmth and routine. A two-year-old cat, for instance, is in the prime of adulthood — energetic, territorial, and fully themselves. Much of what owners read as ‘attitude’ is just a cat being a well-adjusted adult.

Knowing the normal arc helps you spot the abnormal.

Changes that are normal — and ones that aren't

Gradually sleeping more, playing a bit less, and preferring warm spots are normal ageing. But some changes deserve a vet: sudden aggression or hiding, litter-box accidents, night-time yowling, drinking much more, or a personality shift can all signal pain or illness — thyroid, kidney, arthritis, dental or, in older cats, feline cognitive decline. Cats hide illness masterfully, so a behaviour change is often the only clue you get.

The rule of thumb: gradual and gentle is usually age; sudden or dramatic is usually worth a call.

Helping your cat age gracefully

Keep enrichment going — older cats still need play, just gentler. Protect routine, provide warmth and easy-access resting spots, and keep up six-monthly vet checks once they’re senior. A cat whose needs shift with age, and whose owner shifts with them, stays content into old age.
