What cataracts look like

A cataract makes the lens of the eye turn cloudy or bluish-white, and as it develops your dog’s vision fades. You might notice bumping into things, hesitation on stairs or in dim light, or a visibly milky pupil. Cataracts can develop with age, from diabetes, or be inherited in certain breeds.

Don’t confuse them with a normal ageing change called nuclear sclerosis, which gives a hazy grey-blue tint but doesn’t significantly harm vision. Only a vet can tell them apart — so a cloudy eye is worth a check rather than a guess.

Why they matter beyond sight

Cataracts aren’t only about vision. They can trigger inflammation inside the eye and, untreated, lead to painful complications like glaucoma. And in a dog, sudden-onset cataracts can be the first visible sign of diabetes — so a dog whose eyes cloud over quickly should have blood tests, not just an eye exam.

Dogs cope remarkably well with gradual sight loss using smell and hearing, but that’s a reason to monitor, not to ignore.

What can be done

Cataracts can be surgically removed by a veterinary ophthalmologist, often restoring good vision, though not every dog is a candidate. If surgery isn’t right, the focus shifts to managing any inflammation and keeping your dog’s world safe and predictable. Either way, start with your vet, who’ll refer on if needed.
