If You Are Unhappy With Your Vet in South Africa

Start with the practice

Most complaints come from a communication failure rather than a clinical one. Ask for an appointment with the practice principal, in person and not at the front desk.

Go in with specifics: dates, what was said, what was done, what the outcome was. A calm, factual account gets a far better response than an angry one, and it is also what you will need if you escalate.

Ask for your animal’s full clinical records. You are entitled to them, and requesting them in writing is normal.

The South African Veterinary Council

The SAVC is the statutory body registering veterinarians and para-veterinary professionals in South Africa. It handles complaints about professional conduct.

Complaints are submitted in writing with supporting documents. The Council can investigate, hold an inquiry, and impose sanctions including reprimand, fines and removal from the register.

The SAVC deals with professional conduct. It does not award you compensation — a claim for financial loss is a civil matter through the courts.

What is and is not misconduct

A poor outcome is not automatically misconduct. Medicine has genuine uncertainty and animals die despite correct treatment.

What is properly the subject of a complaint: treatment without informed consent, failure to disclose costs, refusal to provide records, dishonesty, working outside competence without referral, or care falling below the accepted standard.

Disputed bills

Ask for an itemised account. You are entitled to understand what each line is.

If you consented to a ceiling and it was exceeded without a call, say so in writing. Many practices will adjust.

If it cannot be resolved, the Consumer Protection Act and the National Consumer Commission are avenues, as is the Small Claims Court for smaller amounts.

Changing practice

You are entitled to move at any time, and to have your records transferred to your new vet. You do not need to explain why.

Request the transfer in writing and give the new practice the old one’s details. Continuity of history genuinely matters for an animal with a chronic condition.
