Cremation vs Aquamation: Understanding Your Pet Aftercare Options
Private vs communal cremation
With private (individual) cremation your pet is cremated alone and their ashes are returned to you. Communal cremation means several pets together, with no ashes returned — a dignified and more affordable option many families choose.
What aquamation is
Aquamation (alkaline hydrolysis) uses warm water and gentle alkalinity to accelerate natural decomposition. It uses about a tenth of the energy of flame cremation, and you still receive ashes back. It's increasingly available across the US.
Home burial
Legal in many areas but check your city and state rules, especially regarding depth and distance from water. If you rent or may move, ashes or a keepsake may be a better anchor for memory than a place you could leave behind.
Deciding without pressure
There's no right answer — only what brings your family comfort. Decide before the day if you can. A good provider will explain every option and price clearly, and never rush you.
If the day is coming
Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
