Pet Diarrhea: Home Care That Helps and Red Flags That Don't Wait
First, assess
A bright adult pet with soft stool and a good appetite can usually be nursed at home. A flat, refusing-food, vomiting, bloody-diarrhea pet cannot. Puppies, kittens, seniors and pets with health conditions get a lower bar for calling the vet.
Home care done right
Don't starve dogs for days — small bland meals (plain boiled chicken or white fish with rice, or a vet gastro diet) fed little and often, constant fresh water, and a gradual mix back to normal food over several days. A probiotic made for pets can shorten episodes.
Red flags
Blood (red or black tar), vomiting alongside, bloating, obvious pain, lethargy, more than 48 hours without improvement, known dietary indiscretion of bones or toxins, or an unvaccinated puppy (parvo until proven otherwise — same day, always).
Repeat offenders
Recurring soft stool points to diet intolerance, parasites, or gut disease — bring a fresh stool sample and a food diary to the vet. Chronic 'sensitive stomach' is usually a solvable puzzle, not a personality trait.
If the day is coming
Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
