Build a Dog Wash Station in Your Yard

If you have a big dog, washing it in the bathroom is a losing battle — the mess, the back strain, the hair in the drain. An outdoor wash point costs very little and makes the whole job a ten-minute exercise.

The simplest version

A garden tap, a hose with a trigger nozzle, and a large plastic tub or an old cement mixing tray on a paved area with a fall towards a drain. Total cost under R400 if you have the tap. Stand the dog in the tub so soapy water is contained and the dog is not standing in mud.

The better version

Raise it. A tub or a purpose-built platform at hip height saves your back entirely. An old kitchen sink or a builder's wheelbarrow tray on a welded frame works well.
Add a mixer. The single upgrade that makes this usable year-round is warm water. A hot and cold mixer tap plumbed outside, or the simple version: run a hose from a bathroom or laundry mixer tap through a window. Cold hosing a dog in a Gauteng July is unkind and most dogs never forgive it.
Non-slip surface. A rubber mat in the tub. A sliding dog panics.
A tie point at chest height so the dog stays put without being held. Never leave a tied dog unattended.
A hook for shampoo and a nail for the towel, at arm's reach.

Drainage matters

Soapy water should run to a gully or a stormwater drain, not into a vegetable bed or against a wall foundation. If you are on a septic tank or a small erf, direct it to a soak-away with gravel. Dog shampoo is mild but flea dips and medicated washes should never go into a fishpond or a river system.

Working in winter

Wash in the warmest part of the day, have two towels ready, and get the dog into the sun or a warm room straight after. A cheap pet hair dryer on the coolest warm setting is worth it for long coats — a wet double coat can stay damp to the skin for hours, which causes hot spots.

Bonus uses

A raised platform is also the best place to trim nails, check for ticks and clean ears. Dogs stand still on a surface they associate with routine handling, and your back will thank you at year three.
