Ear Mites: The Itch Behind That Coffee-Ground Ear Gunk

The telltale signs

Frantic ear scratching, head shaking, and dry, dark, crumbly debris like coffee grounds. Ear mites are most common in kittens, puppies and outdoor cats, and spread readily between animals in a home (rarely to humans).

Mites or infection?

Yeast and bacterial ear infections look similar but need different treatment — and scratched-raw ears often develop both. A quick vet look under the microscope settles it in minutes; guessing with pet-shop drops often wastes weeks.

Treatment is easy now

Modern single-dose spot-on treatments (many flea/tick products cover mites) plus a good ear cleaning usually solve it. All cats and dogs in the household need treating at once, or the mites simply circulate back.

If scratching continues

Persistent ear trouble after treatment suggests infection, allergies, or a foreign object like a grass seed. Chronic ear disease is one of the most common vet visits worldwide — early attention keeps ears comfortable and hearing intact.

If the day is coming

Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
