Easter Hazards: Chocolate, Lilies and Plastic Grass

Chocolate hunts and dogs

Hidden chocolate eggs and dog noses are a famous emergency-room combination — dogs find what children miss, foil and all. Count the eggs you hide, supervise the hunt, and keep baskets up high. Darker chocolate is more dangerous; any decent quantity warrants a call to the vet.

Lilies: the cat catastrophe

Easter lilies are among the most lethal plants for cats — petals, pollen, leaves, even vase water can cause kidney failure, and grooming pollen off fur counts as ingestion. Cat homes should refuse lilies at the door; if contact happens, it's an immediate emergency vet trip.

The small stuff

Plastic Easter grass and ribbon are classic linear foreign bodies (cats especially) requiring surgery; xylitol-sweetened candy is toxic to dogs; hot cross buns carry raisins — kidney danger. Paper grass and pet-zone-free baskets solve most of it.

Host smart

Guests plus open doors plus table scraps is the standard holiday incident report. Give pets a calm room during the peak chaos, brief visitors ('nothing from the table, please'), and keep the emergency clinic number where the family can see it.
