Emergency and after-hours care is expensive because a full team is on site overnight for a caseload that may or may not arrive. That standby cost is built into every bill.

Expect a consultation or triage fee of R900 to R1,800 before anything else happens. Standalone emergency hospitals in Gauteng, Cape Town and Durban sit at the upper end.

What common emergencies actually run to

• Assessment, bloods and a night on a drip — roughly R3,500 to R8,000
• Bloat or GDV surgery — roughly R18,000 to R40,000
• Emergency caesarean — roughly R8,000 to R20,000
• Snakebite with antivenom — roughly R10,000 to R30,000
• Severe biliary with transfusion — roughly R7,000 to R18,000
• Blocked bladder in a cat — roughly R6,000 to R14,000

Deposits and payment

Most emergency facilities ask for a deposit up front, commonly R2,000 to R5,000, before admitting. This is standard and not a judgement of you.

Ask immediately about payment arrangements. Some practices will split a bill, some accept a signed acknowledgement of debt, and some work with pet-specific credit providers. The answer is much better before treatment than after.

Preparing before you need it

Find your two nearest after-hours facilities now and save both numbers. At two in the morning with a collapsing dog is the wrong time to be searching.

A dedicated emergency fund of even R5,000 changes what is possible. So does pet medical aid, provided it was taken out before the condition existed.

Know how you would physically get there. A large dog that cannot walk needs a blanket used as a stretcher and a second pair of hands.

When you genuinely cannot afford it

Say so at the door, clearly and early. Ask what the cheapest path to keeping your pet comfortable is. Sometimes there is a middle option between full intensive care and nothing.

SPCA emergency services exist in most centres and will treat on a means-tested basis. Phone ahead — capacity is limited and after-hours cover varies by branch.

If the honest answer is that treatment is beyond reach and your pet is suffering, that conversation is a legitimate one to have with the vet. Choosing not to prolong suffering you cannot relieve is not a failure.
