Feeding Senior Pets: What Changes and What Doesn't

The protein myth

Old advice said restrict protein for aging kidneys — modern evidence says the opposite for healthy seniors: they need quality protein to fight muscle loss. Protein restriction is for diagnosed kidney disease under veterinary guidance, not for age itself.

Watch weight both ways

Middle-aged spread strains joints and organs — but weight loss in a senior is the bigger red flag, often signaling thyroid, kidney, dental or dental disease before anything else shows. Weigh monthly; trends beat impressions.

Comfort and appetite

Raised bowls ease arthritic necks; warming wet food unlocks aroma for fading noses; smaller, more frequent meals suit slower digestion. A senior who suddenly prefers soft food may be nursing tooth pain — mouths first, menus second.

Supplements with evidence

Omega-3 fish oils for joints and cognition and specific joint supplements have reasonable support; the rest of the supplement aisle mostly supports the store. Spend the money on senior bloodwork instead — twice-yearly checks catch what food can't fix.

If the day is coming

Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
